Rogersville

Just North of Mooresburg, a 15-minute drive, is historic Rogersville, founded a year before the American Revolution.  In Rogersville you have easy, quick access to fast food, grocery, fuel, banks, hardware, laundromat, Walmart, and a quaint and history-rich old town with businesses and an art district. Rogersville was settled by Davy Crockett's grandparents in 1775 and is a showcase of original, mostly untouched, Federalist style buildings which remain intact dating back to 1789.  So much history is packed into this quaint town. Everywhere you look are historic markers telling of the buildings, the significance in history, and the visitors and owners of the tavern which was a common stopping place for this country's biggest names of the time, such as Andrew Jackson.  Also, there is still standing, the hotel where notorious historical figures stayed, as well as the cemetery where you will be sure to see  several names you recognize from the history books.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

This particular area-Proffitt Ridge-was in the heart of the historic and short-lived US State of Franklin.  In 1784, North Carolina ceded its western lands to the United States in an effort to pay off its debt related to the American war for Independence.  Thus, the State of Franklin was formed with the intent of it being the 14th state of the new Union.  It existed as an independent state for about four years before eventually being reintegrated into North Carolina when Congress failed to ever finalize the transaction.  Then, in 1790, it was combined with other lands to become the state of Tennessee.
